Will Smartphones Replace Handheld GPS Units?
Geocachers worldwide have been using hand held GPS devices, vehicle GPS navigation and even compass and map methods to find geocaches. With advances in cellular technology, geocaching has gained a relatively new method of finding and retrieving these hidden treasures.
Over the years, cellular technology has advanced significantly in GPS integration and geocachers are jumping at the opportunity to try it out. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the number of cell phone subscriptions across the globe hit over 5 billion in 2010. So what does this mean for handheld GPS units? Are we witnessing the slow demise of the handheld GPS by the dexterous hands of GPS-equipped smartphones ?
Smartphone Pros and ConsThough a smart phone can be a great way to get started with geocaching it does have one major disadvantage. That would be GPS accuracy. Typically, handheld GPS units are extremely accurate. Newer handhelds are capable of pinpointing your position within 15 – 30 feet, whether you are in the middle of nowhere, or the center of a bustling city. By contrast, even the latest smartphones provide inaccurate data when locating your position.

What is the best hand held GPS for sailing available at a reasonable cost?
I have a small 27 ft sailboat that I love and I am a newbie at sailing. I would like a great, all around, inexpensive but durable hand held gps. I see a lot out there, but many are very fancy and I am not technologically inclined. Any thoughts?

Geocache treasure hunt held at Landmark Park
Landmark Park is hosting a geocache treasure hunt on May 19 with $500 worth of prizes hidden around the park.
Geocaching is the popular sport which sends participants on a real life treasure hunt in search of caches of hidden prizes using a handheld GPS unit or smart phone. Prizes hidden include family memberships to Landmark Park, one free ice cream cone per month from the park’s Martin Drugstore, passes to Water World, a Dothan Magazine subscription, Basketcase Cafe gift card, Adventureland gift passes, Big Fun day play passes, picture frame from Haynes Photography, a Club Sun gift pack, tickets to the barbecue festival from The Main Event, smoothie gift certificates from Tropical Smoothie.
Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the hunt will start at 11 a.m. You may enter as an individual or a team but only one prize will be awarded per registration. Registration is $10 plus paid gate admission.
